I have a special sleeve with a shoulder on the top to keep the sleeve from sliding down the cylinder over time. The reason you need the special sleeve is because if you just leave a ridge or shelf at the bottom of the bore for the sleeve to sit on since the piston skirt comes out of the bore at BDC. The aluminum piston skirt will rub against the aluminum cylinder wall and tear up the piston in no time.
The exception to this is if you install a 1" deck extension. Then it's easier to leave a shoulder at the bottom of the bore for the sleeve to sit on. The long rod prevents the piston from coming out of the bore at BDC
